University of Cincinnati suspending students who flaunt COVID-19 safety protocols

Students allowed to study remotely, encouraged to make “better decisions in the future”

“Everybody wants to stay on campus,” University of Cincinnati freshman Tabitha Robinson said. “So doing, like, what we’re told to do is really important to keep us all safe and to reduce the spread.””We’re just trying to do whatever we can to stay on campus and keep the numbers down,” freshman Kayleigh Donhoff said.Robinson and Donhoff said they’ve heard about UC students suspended because they failed to follow COVID-19 safety protocols.”People are getting suspended, but it’s for things like being in other people’s rooms without masks, going to, like, big parties, things like that,” Robinson said.The exact number of UC students who’ve been suspended is unclear.A university spokeswoman declined an interview, but in a statement wrote, “UC reserves the right to issue interim suspensions … for behavior that poses a significant threat to the health, safety, and welfare of the UC community and its members. For the Fall 2020 semester, students who were issued interim suspensions had their conduct cases adjudicated within three business days or less.”If a suspension is upheld, students could have to spend the rest of the semester learning solely online while completing “..other educational measures to assist students in learning from their behavior and making better decisions in the future.”Although UC will not discuss individual cases, WLWT investigator Todd Dykes has been told at least some students have had to write essays as part of those “other educational measures.”Students Dykes talked with Monday, like freshman William Smith, appreciate the steps UC is taking.”I know I want to stay on campus and make friends and have a good time here,” Smith said. “So, to do that … I am staying in my room, wearing a mask, being sanitized.”About 75% of classes at UC are happening online, so many suspended students are still able to complete all their coursework.UC is publishing a weekly COVID-19 dashboard. Based on data included on the dashboard, out of the approximately 150 positive cases, 22 students were being isolated on campus as of Wednesday. Fifteen students were isolated at home, and 28 students were being quarantined on campus.Fortunately, there’s still a lot of capacity to isolate and quarantine more students at this point, should the need arise.
